UTPA Volunteer Resource Program Names Volunteer of
the Year
Edinburg, TX April 18, 2006 – The University
of Texas-Pan American’s Volunteer Resource Program (VRP) has named
Eduardo Carrillo Volunteer of the Year for the 2005-06
academic year.
Eduardo Carrillo accepted his Volunteer of the Year honor at the VRP's
!Volunteer Celebration 2006! on Tuesday, April 18, 2006.
The celebration recognized the outstanding community
service of student volunteers and
the contributions of faculty who incorporated service learning
concepts into their course work. As president of the UTPA
Accounting Society, he was in charge of the Volunteer Income
Tax Assistance (VITA) Center on UTPA’s
main campus, which assisted many low-income individuals
in preparing their income tax returns free of charge. His
faculty advisor was Dr. Gouranga Ganguli, Accounting professor.
The VITA 2006 Campaign emphasized the importance of
Earned Income Tax Credits for clients. The Internal Revenue
Service has stated that nearly 25% of eligible workers
don’t
know they can receive the credit. This
program educated clients on what earned income
is, how to get it and what to do with the extra money
(if any) on their return.
UTPA’s Volunteer Resource Program (VRP) assists students with finding
a nonprofit organization to volunteer for. Exciting opportunities
are available at libraries, hospitals
and other community groups right now!
For more information on how you or your student
organization can volunteer with the VRP, contact the
